Dallas transit agency was offered extra security

Local and federal authorities offered to help secure Dallas-area bus and train stations Wednesday after a shootout left two people dead, the latest in a string of violent incidents on Dallas mass transit, an agency spokesman said.

Dallas police and the federal Transportation Security Administration reached out to Dallas Area Rapid Transit after Tuesday afternoon’s shooting on a platform in Richardson, which is north of the city, DART spokesman Mark Ball said.

Dallas house for $16 has vacated

A man who gained notoriety for claiming he could live in a $340,000 suburban Dallas house for $16 has vacated the home following a judge’s order.

Kenneth Robinson had filed an “affidavit of adverse possession” giving him the right to live in the empty foreclosed home in Flower Mound. He also became a kind of local celebrity, speaking to law school students and creating a website, http://16dollarhouse.com, about his experience.

But Denton County Justice of the Peace J.W. Hand ruled Monday that lienholder Bank of America can force the 51-year-old Robinson out. The bank foreclosed on the house last month.

Big rain ends drought in Dallas-Fort Worth

Last week’s unprecedented 4-plus inches of winter rainfall floated Dallas-Fort Worth out of drought for the first time since July and there’s a good chance for up to an inch more of rain through tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

A swatch of North Texas — just less than 5 percent of the state — is now drought-free, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday.

DFW home prices fell in November, mirroring U.S.

Dallas-Fort Worth home prices fell in November, along with prices in most of the nation’s largest metro areas, according to the latest Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller Home Price Index released Tuesday.

The monthly report showed that area home prices dropped 0.8 percent from November 2010 and 1.3 percent from October.

Dallas meat-packing spill ended up a bloody mess

A little pilotless plane with a $75 frame has uncovered a spill of pigs’ blood into a Dallas creek, launching an intensive investigation. The Dallas County District Attorney’s office has confirmed it is investigating the spill from Columbia Packing Co. into the Cedar Creek, which feeds into the environmentally sensitive Trinity River.

An amateur pilot had sent up his autopilot-controlled craft with a camera attached over Dallas two months ago. It brought back pictures of the creek running red with what looked like blood.

Hearse used after JFK slain in Dallas

A white hearse used to transport President John F. Kennedy’s body following his assassination in Dallas has sold at auction for $160,000. The Cadillac carried the bronze casket containing JFK’s body on the afternoon of Nov. 22, 1963, from Parkland Memorial Hospital to Dallas Love Field Airport, from where the body was flown to Washington.
